When a tooth is severely damaged or causing major problems for other teeth, the most effective option may be to remove it entirely. By doing this, we can ensure that the best possible long-term outcome for the patient can be achieved.
Most patients who receive a tooth extraction experience minimal, if any, pain during the process. After the tooth has been removed, it is very important that a blood clot is quickly formed at the extraction site. This will prevent blood loss and encourage healing. We form the blood clot by having the patient bite down on a gauze pad for a period of 30 to 45 minutes. Once the clot has developed, the patient should be very careful not to disturb it. With this in mind, the patient should avoid using a straw, rinsing vigorously, smoking, consuming drugs or alcohol and participating in intense exercise for at least 24 hours following the procedure.
Many patients will experience some swelling after an extraction. This can be dealt with by using an ice pack on the outer cheek near the extraction site. In most situations, a patient will be able to continue with their regular brushing and flossing practices just one day later. If the patient experiences severe pain or excessive bleeding at any time after the procedure, they should contact our office as soon as they can.
Oasis Family Dental also provides wisdom teeth extractions for patients. Also known as the third molars, a person’s wisdom teeth will generally develop when they are in their late teens or early twenties. Although a small number of individuals do end up keeping their wisdom teeth, most people have them removed because of the problems and issues that they can cause other teeth inside the mouth.
Removing wisdom teeth is typically more intensive and involved than regular teeth extractions. It usually takes about a week for a person to fully recover after having their wisdom teeth removed. This amount of time can vary, depending both upon how severely the teeth were impacted prior to their removal and the overall healing tendencies of the patient. While going through recovery, the patient should make sure to get lots of rest, drink plenty of fluids and chew only soft foods. This will help make the recovery process as quick and as easy as possible.
