Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a modern orthodontic treatment system that straightens teeth without bulky metal braces. The system’s clear, removable aligners are made of a durable thermoplastic material. When you wear the aligners, they apply controlled force to your teeth.

Over time, this controlled force promotes tooth movement and shifts your teeth into proper alignment. The result is a more attractive, straighter smile. Since being created in 1997, Invisalign has helped enhance the smiles of over six million men, women, and teens.

How does Invisalign work?

First, Dr. Sheth evaluates your teeth to make sure you’re an ideal Invisalign candidate. Then, she maps out a detailed treatment plan that includes the precise direction of tooth movement. She can even show you what your new smile will look like.

Once your treatment plan is ready, she orders your first set of aligners. You’ll get a new set of aligners every few weeks. It’s important that you wear your aligners for at least 20-22 hours per day to guarantee optimal results in a timely fashion.

Each new set of aligners will have minor adjustments so that your teeth continue their movement according to Dr. Sheth’s treatment plan.

What are the benefits of Invisalign?

Since your aligners are removable, you can take them out when you eat and brush your teeth. This is a huge advantage when you compare Invisalign to traditional braces. You don’t have to worry about getting food stuck in your brackets, and brushing your teeth is far easier.

Also, Invisalign treatment is very discreet. Often times when you’re wearing your aligners, people can’t even tell you have a dental appliance on. You can smile confidently for the duration of your treatment.

How long does treatment with Invisalign take?

Treatment plans vary depending on a host of factors, including your age and the state of your smile before starting Invisalign. On average, Invisalign patients wear aligners for approximately 12 months. However, in some cases, it can take as little as a few months or last longer than a year. When you start Invisalign, Dr. Sheth can give you an estimate on how long she thinks you’ll need your aligners.
