Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are individual, wafer-thin, tooth-shaped covers that Dr. Sheth permanently cements to the front of your teeth. Veneers are usually made from porcelain or resin composite materials for a natural look that mimics the appearance of healthy enamel. Porcelain tends to be more stain-resistant than resin.

What can veneers do?

Veneers transform your smile by covering defects, strengthening your teeth, and creating a whole new look. You can use veneers to:

  • Straighten mild misalignments
  • Make your teeth longer or wider
  • Eliminate gaps
  • Hide broken, chipped, or cracked teeth
  • Cover stains and discolorations
  • Even the lengths of your teeth
  • Hide visible fillings and defects
  • Hide crooked or twisted teeth

You never have to whiten veneers; they maintain their luster until they need to be replaced, after 7-15 years.

Can anyone get veneers?

If you’d like to improve your smile with veneers, Dr. Sheth first examines your teeth, gums, and jawbone to be sure they’re free of decay, infections, or other problems. If you have any oral health issues, she first resolves those before recommending you for veneers.

You can’t go back to your natural teeth after the veneers are applied. If they fall off, or if you decide you want a different look to your veneers, you must replace them with new veneers.

What happens when I get veneers?

You need several appointments when you’re improving your smile with veneers. After Dr. Sheth has determined that you’re a candidate for veneers, she gives you a local anesthetic and then lightly sands your teeth. She must remove some of your enamel so that the veneers don’t make your teeth look unnatural or bulky.

Dr. Sheth then takes impressions of your prepared teeth, which are sent to a lab. She also sends the lab recommendations for the size, shape, and color of your veneers. While you wait for your custom-designed veneers, you wear temporary veneers to protect your teeth.

After your custom-designed veneers are ready, you return to Oasis Family Dental so Dr. Sheth can check the fit and cement and seal them. You leave the office with a beautiful new smile.
